Kazchrome Secures Environmental Product Declaration for High-Carbon Ferrochrome
ERG subsidiary Kazchrome awarded international Environmental Product Declaration for high-carbon ferrochrome production
A subsidiary of Luxembourg-based Eurasian Resources Group (ERG), Transnational Company Kazchrome Joint Stock Company (Kazchrome), has been awarded an international Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its high-carbon ferrochrome, marking a significant milestone in the company’s sustainability and transparency efforts.
Kazchrome, one of the world’s largest ferroalloy producers, is headquartered in Kazakhstan and plays a key role in the global supply of chromium-based alloys used in stainless steel manufacturing.
High-carbon ferrochrome is a critical ferroalloy used primarily in stainless steel production.
It typically contains between 4% and 9% carbon, 60% and 70% chromium, and 1% and 3% silicon.
These properties enhance the hardness, strength and corrosion resistance of steel, making the alloy essential for applications in construction, automotive manufacturing and industrial equipment.
The EPD certification confirms that ERG’s products meet internationally recognised environmental standards and provides transparent disclosure of their environmental impact across the full production lifecycle.
Kazchrome initiated the environmental impact evaluation process, appointing SGS, a global provider of inspection, certification and environmental assessment services, to conduct the initial study.
Independent experts from the International EPD System subsequently carried out a comprehensive lifecycle assessment of Kazchrome’s high-carbon ferrochrome production.
The assessment evaluated key environmental factors, including:
- Mining and transportation of raw materials
- Energy and water consumption
- Processing efficiency
- The proportion of primary versus recycled materials used in production
Kazchrome noted that its advanced processing, recovery and recycling technologies enable more efficient use of natural resources. These technologies reduce reliance on virgin raw materials, lower the carbon footprint of operations and minimise waste sent to tailings storage facilities.
“We proactively initiated the EPD process to confirm that our products meet international environmental standards.
This strengthens our position in global markets and supports sustainable development in our host regions, ensuring stable operations, jobs and confidence for our people,” says Kazchrome general director Sergey Prokopyev.
He adds that the certification reflects ERG’s broader commitment to sustainability and reinforces the global competitiveness of ferroalloy products manufactured in Kazakhstan.
